What to Do When Your iPhone Gets Wet

What to Do When Your iPhone Gets Wet

So it happened. You dropped your phone in water and now you do not know what to do.

Technology and water have never been friends and will never be friends. Even phones that are labeled as water-resistant can and will still be damaged by water. The only way to ensure your phone is not damaged by water is to completely avoid it, but, let’s face it, that is impossible.

Fortunately, most phones, especially the newer models of the iPhone, are durable and robust meaning that they do not succumb as quickly or easily to water damage. In most cases, our team is able to repair the water damage your iPhone has sustained.

Once your iPhone has been wet or exposed to water, there are steps you want to take to preserve the phone and prevent any irreversible damage. Below, we will go over what these steps are.

Steps to Take When Your iPhone Gets Wet

A wet iPhone is not a good thing and you want to make sure you follow these steps:

  • First, take your iPhone out of the water and never let it simply sit in the water

  • If your phone is plugged in, unplug it immediately. NEVER plug in a phone just exposed to water

  • Turn your phone off if it is on. Do NOT turn your phone on at all

  • Remove the case from your iPhone and take out any SD cards or SIM cards that are present

  • Dry off and wipe the phone down with a dry soft cloth – you want to get in every crack, hole, and crevice (you can use a Q-tip or other small accessory to help with this)

  • Turn your iPhone upside down and shake it gently to help facilitate any trapped water getting out

Get Your iPhone Completely Dry

The goal once your iPhone has been dropped in water is to get it completely dry. You do NOT want to use a high-heat method to do this, so no blow dryer or heat gun. These will only result in more damage being done to the phone.

You have likely heard that rice can help dry out your phone. Leaving your wet iPhone in dry, uncooked rice for 48 hours can help draw out moisture, but you run the risk of the rice getting into any cracks and ports for your phone and thus turning one problem into a multitude of problems for you to deal with.

The preferred option for drying out a wet iPhone is silica gel. Silica gel comes in those small packets you find in your new jeans, purse, or shoes. These are excellent absorbers of moisture and can help get your phone dried out very safely and effectively.

You can purchase silica gel in any large home improvement store, craft store, and online. Place your phone into the silica gel and allow it to dry out for 48 hours.
